Learn Foreign Languages Abroad

Living with a host family and becoming part of the local community while spending time abroad is a great chance to learn a language or improve on what you’ve learned.

These language placements consist of personal classes on a one-on-one basis. The lessons are tailored to suit your ability and individual requirements. You will normally study 15 hours per week from Monday to Friday, which will give you plenty of time to complete homework, spend time with your local host family, and practice your skills in your new surroundings.

It’s also easy for you to participate in local cultural experiences through libraries, entertainment events, and music.

After completing your weeks of language instruction, you could then go on to take part in another volunteer placement where you can put your language skills to good use such as Teaching in Ecuador or Music & Culture in Senegal.

If you want to take part in a project where an intermediate to fluent level in the local language is required, then completing a four week long Language Course first can enable you to take part in another internship like Medicine in Argentina or Human Rights in Morocco.

Foreign Language Classes for Volunteers

On some placements you can learn or improve your skills in the local language by taking a language course alongside your main placement. These language courses are scheduled in the free time that you have outside of your chosen volunteer placement and can be done in 5-hour, 14-hour, 30-hour, or 60-hour increments. If doing the 60-hour language course alongside your volunteer placement, you’ll need to be in country for at least 10 to 12 weeks.

Language Add-on courses are available in the same destinations and languages as full-time Language Courses. For more information please visit our Language Add-ons page.

Group Language Courses Projects for High School Students

For teen volunteers, Language Courses projects are available as Care & Language High School Special programs. High School Specials are designed for volunteers aged 16-19 to join a group of their peers working together under the guidance of our local staff.
