Communicating While in Nepal
There are a number of ways to keep in touch with home and WIN-NEPAL staff while you are planning to have volunteerings. All of our placements have access to internet cafes, though if you are placed in a rural area you may have to wait until you go into town to use them. This is typically the case if you are participating on a Conservation & Environment, Culture & Community, or Archaeology Project – staff at these projects usually take volunteers to a nearby town once a week.
Generally, you should only use your host family’s phone in emergencies, except to receive calls, so the internet is the best way to contact people at home. There are also public phones or communication centers near almost all our placements – these are ideal for local calls to other volunteers, general questions to our local staff, or the occasional call home (this can be expensive, so we recommend using Skype if you can).
Once you have arrived and are settled in, our staff will help you get in touch with home during your induction, so you can let someone know that you have arrived safely. All volunteers are also given an emergency list of contacts on their my volunteer program page before their departure – we recommend sharing this information with family and friends before you leave.
You also have the option of buying a cheap mobile phone when you arrive. One of our staff members can help you buy a phone and a local Sim card during your induction. This is helpful for keeping in touch with other volunteers and WIN-NEPAL staff throughout your placement.
